After I engraved this brass metal lighter, I became interested in the company that created it. I knew that Zippo had a long history and was considered a bit of a gold standard with regard to American lighters. My brief research uncovered some interesting facts.
American George G. Blaisdell founded Zippo Manufacturing Company in 1932, and produced the first Zippo lighter in early 1933, being inspired by an Austrian cigarette lighter of similar design made by IMCO. It got its name because Blaisdell liked the sound of the word "zipper" and "zippo" sounded more modern.
Fast forward almost 100 years and a cool antique brass Zippo lighter crosses my engraving desk. I love it!
