Casa Dragones Tequila Project - Houston Calligrapher
Oftentimes, I am asked to engrave on spirit bottles like tequila. Rarely am I asked to calligraph them. However, I received a request from Casa Dragones Tequila to calligraph spirit bottles for some of their very special clients here in Houston. Of course, I LOVE (ADORE/GO WILD FOR/WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY) working with spirit and wine companies so I try my best to always accommodate those requests. This was relatively easy to accomplish as I just calligraphed using my trusty Michael Sull penholder, which has become my workhorse, along with my trusty Tachikawa G nib, also my "go-to". The paper had a slightly slick texture to it which was not ideal for Moon Palace sumi, but sumi ink is a soldier and it soldiered on. However, I have said this before and I will say it again....It's easier for me to engrave a spirit bottle than it is for me to calligraph one. Understand, that I know that this makes NO SENSE, but to me it makes perfect sense. I guess because I engrave wine & spirit bottles so much now at on-site events that most of the time it feels slightly mindless. Not entirely, but slightly.
When I calligraph a bottle, I tend to give more thought to positioning, paper &/or glass texture and of course I have to wait for drying....the DREADED 15-20 minutes to wait for sumi ink to completely dry. The universe knows if I place the tequila bottle back into its case without ensuring that it is completely dry.....that'd be a problem. Oh yeah.... On the contrary, when it comes to engraving a wine or spirit bottle, there is no dry time. I engrave it, clean it up possibly color it and I'm on to the next bottle. Bada bing, bada boom. Nothing to it.
I do like the result with this tequila bottle. Now if only, I could try the tequila....specifically for research purposes, of course. Due diligence is a necessity! Cheers!
