A Name in Gold: Houston Engraving the Guerlain Lipstick Case
A name that catches the light
The case is small enough to close a hand around. Polished gold, faintly warm from the lights of the counter, and across its face a single name: Anastasia, written in a flowing script with a capital that sweeps back over the rest of the word.
Under certain angles the engraving almost disappears into the shine. Turn the case a few degrees and every line returns, bright and fine, as if the name had been waiting just beneath the surface.
This is the quiet pleasure of engraving a Guerlain Lipstick Case. An object designed to be beautiful becomes, in a few minutes, an object that belongs to someone.
Writing on the outside of the case
The Guerlain Lipstick Case opens to reveal a small mirror, and some engravers choose to work there. I prefer the outside. A name on the exterior is seen every time the case leaves the handbag, and it becomes part of the object's face rather than a secret tucked inside.
Engraving the outer case asks for a different kind of attention than calligraphy on paper. The surface curves away from the hand, and the polished gold reflects the room and the lights back into the work. There is nowhere for a hesitant line to hide.
The letterforms still come from pointed pen script. The long entry stroke of the A, the loop that crosses back over the name and the gentle rhythm of the lowercase all follow the same proportions I use on wedding envelopes. On metal there is no swell of ink to carry the contrast, so the elegance lives entirely in the movement of the line, and each cut catches the light a little differently as the case turns.
An object carried close
There is a reason a lipstick case invites a name. It travels in a handbag, comes out at a dinner table and is touched many times a day. It is one of the few luxuries a woman handles as casually as her keys, and also one of the most personal.
The Guerlain Lipstick Case is made to be kept. Its case is refillable, so the bullet inside changes with the season while the case itself remains. An engraved name turns that permanence into something intimate: not a product that will be finished and discarded, but a small heirloom that happens to hold a red.
A case like this might be a birthday gift, a thank you to a bridesmaid or a quiet present a woman gives herself. Whatever the occasion, something familiar happens when it is handed back. The person looks at it a little longer than expected.
Engraving events in Houston
Much of my engraving happens on site, at Guerlain events in Houston as well as boutique events and private celebrations. Guests choose their piece, give a name or a few initials and watch it written into the metal in a matter of minutes. The waiting becomes part of the experience rather than an interruption of it.
For luxury brands and retailers, live engraving gives a launch or a holiday event a reason to linger. For hosts, it offers favors that guests will actually keep. In both cases the work is done by hand, in a script refined over fifteen years of calligraphy and engraving.
I accept a limited number of Houston engraving engagements each season. If you are planning an event that deserves a personal touch, I would be glad to hear about it.
