Amazing Grace: Engraving a Guerlain Fragrance Bottle
Two words in gold
The bottle is heavy in the hand, faceted like cut crystal, with a gilded cap and a collar of white cord wound beneath it. Across its face, two words now sweep diagonally from corner to corner: Amazing Grace.
Once the cut is made, each line is filled with gold. Against the amber of the fragrance behind it, the gold seems to glow from within the glass rather than sit upon it.
This bottle was engraved at a Guerlain event, where guests bring their fragrance to the table and leave with something no other bottle carries.
Writing on glass
Glass is less forgiving than paper and less forgiving than metal. Each cut leaves a fine line that cannot be lifted or polished away, and on a faceted bottle the surface changes angle beneath the hand as the letters travel across it.
The script follows the same pointed pen proportions I use for wedding calligraphy. The tall entry stroke of the A, the descending loop of the g that crosses into the line below and the long flourish that closes beneath Grace all have to be planned before the first cut, because there is no second attempt.
What I love about glass is that the engraving becomes part of the light. Hold the bottle to a window and the gilded words float over the fragrance; set it on a dark surface and they gleam.
When it is not a name
Most people ask for a name or a set of initials. Occasionally someone asks for words instead, and those requests stay with me. Amazing Grace is a phrase most of us have heard sung, at a wedding or a funeral or a quiet Sunday, and it carries a weight no monogram could.
I never ask why a phrase was chosen. Sometimes the reason is offered and sometimes it is not, and both feel right. What matters is that a fragrance someone wears close to the skin now carries a few words that mean something only they fully understand.
There is an intimacy in that pairing. Scent is already one of the most private forms of memory, and an engraved phrase gives that memory a visible form.
Guerlain engraving in Houston
I engrave for Guerlain at events in Houston, working on fragrance bottles and lipstick cases at the counter while guests wait. Each piece is engraved by hand in a script refined over fifteen years of calligraphy and engraving.
For guests, it turns a purchase into a keepsake. For the brand, it creates a moment people remember and a bottle they will never quite be willing to finish.
I also accept a limited number of private engraving engagements in Houston each season, for weddings, celebrations and luxury retail events. If you are planning something that deserves a personal touch, I would be glad to hear about it.
